Videos... Consuming, Creating and Learning

As a mature aged student, I have experience of video consumption and creation for educational purposes.

As a consumer, I have been so  much more engaged on Moodle accessing a variety of media types to learn and understand concepts.  My favourite bits are the YouTube clips.  I like that I can watch some of them at 1.5 speed as I am so time poor!!!

In the last couple of years I carried out a university subject (Performing Arts for Educators) that required us to record videos of us storytelling, dancing and singing... how embarrassing!  I learnt a lot about video editing (I used Windows Moviemaker) and enjoyed working on the products.  One learning outcome was to be ABLE to speak dramatically.  This is not something that can be assessed on paper.  If you can ignore excessive cheesiness feel free to have a laugh at my finished product below.

My children have used iMovie on their iPads for creating schoolwork. My niece interviewed me on camera for an assignment on the weekend.  It is clear that video is filtering its way into classrooms.

I recently applied to be a part of the Logan City Teacher Education Centre of Excellence.  Part of the application process was to record (with no bells and whistles, i.e. NO EDITING) a 60 second self introduction video. Another embarrassing task!  I did it, got into their Ready Set Teach program (hooray) with a dodgy smartphone video.  For the purpose of this task I decided to play around with the video content and see what I could come up with on Pow Toon. Here's my finished product...

As far as classroom applications go, video is great.  I have outlined an activity below to integrate video into a Year 9 Business and Economics class.

Business Activity

Implementing SAMR

Substitution Type a report: Compare these two products, identify which one is superior (has the competitive edge) and justify why.
Augmentation Type a report: Research two similar products online, identify which one is superior (has the competitive edge) and justify why.
Modification Create a product review. Research two similar products online, identify which one is superior (has the competitive edge) and justify why, posting a video of your review on the class blog
Redefinition Create a product experiment and share on the world-wide web. Research two similar products online. Video a controlled product experiment.  Discuss the results of your experiment on video and identify which has product has the competitive edge and why.

  1. WOW! Your blog post is superb! You obviously have a talent with making and using videos. And as that is one area of weakness for me I completely admire your talent!
I also love the inclusion of YouTube clips in the learning materials. I am a visual learner and the combination of text and the clips help to solidify my understanding of concepts and keep the learning engaging. Therefore I am sure our future young learners would appreciate videos as well.
Your videos were entertaining and I love how to related the idea of not letting fears hold us back with your story! It is something that most kids would be able to relate to (and possible a few parents as well)!
Thanks for the tip about speeding up YouTube clips. I had not realised I could do that and will definitely use that feature from now on.

  2. Thanks heaps for your feedback Helen. I appreciate all the things you said :) I am really enjoying keeping this blog but I fear that I am spending WAY too long! Haha. Every time I go to do something else I keep reverting back to this subject.

  3. Yes! I know how you feel as far as spending too much time on this subject. I have also enjoyed creating my blog. There is no looking back for me now! There have been a few times I wish I could include reflections of my learning from my other subject (EDSE12025).
